Heat Fusion & Electrofusion Pipe Joining
Properly made fusion joints — prepped, heated, and cooled to the manufacturer's procedure.

A fusion joint is only as good as the procedure behind it. On Our Way Plumbing performs the three main methods of joining thermoplastic pipe: butt fusion, socket fusion, and electrofusion. Each one melts the pipe and fitting surfaces under controlled heat so the material flows together and cools into a single, leak-free piece.
Butt fusion joins two pipe ends face to face. The ends are clamped, faced square, aligned, heated on a plate, then pressed together under controlled force and held until cool — ideal for straight runs of polyethylene. Socket fusion heats the outside of the pipe and the inside of a fitting at the same time, then pushes them together; it is the standard method for PP-R and small-diameter polyethylene. Electrofusion uses fittings with embedded heating wire; a processor delivers the exact energy the fitting's barcode calls for. It is the go-to method for repairs, tie-ins, saddle taps, and tight trenches where a butt fusion machine will not fit.
Good fusion depends on clean, scraped surfaces, correct temperatures, and proper cooling times — shortcuts cause hidden failures. We follow the pipe and fitting manufacturer's parameters on every joint and pressure test the finished work. Heat Fusion & Electrofusion Pipe Joining FAQ
Common questions about our heat fusion & electrofusion pipe joining service.
Electrofusion is preferred for repairs, connecting to existing pipe, saddle tap branches, and tight spaces where a butt fusion machine cannot be set up. Butt fusion is typically more economical on long straight runs of polyethylene.
Generally no. Fusion requires compatible materials — polyethylene to polyethylene, polypropylene to polypropylene. Connecting different materials is done with listed transition fittings.
Butt fusion joints are checked for a uniform double bead and proper alignment. Electrofusion fittings have indicators and processor records. Ultimately, the system is pressure tested to confirm it is leak-free before being placed in service.
